Stainless Steel Broadfork *Pre-Order*
What is a broadfork?
A broadfork is a hand-tool featuring two handles, a horizontal foot bar and protruding tines which help to aerate the soil while offering minimal disturbance. To use a broadfork, the tines should be pushed into the soil, with the help of your body weight on the foot bar, and pulled back to lift the soil up by a couple of inches.
Why choose a broadfork?
Aerates with minimal disturbance
A broadfork is the perfect tool for the regenerative flower farmer, market gardener and other low disturbance growing systems. Broadforking doesn’t flip soil, it gently lifts it and creates channels for air and water flow. Broadforks are particularly useful for heavy clay soils where building and maintaining soil structure is important.
Protects the delicate balance of soil life
Microbes within the soil need air, moisture, organic matter and plants. Broadforking allows microbes to remain where they are as part of the ecosystem, while increasing their access to the air and water they rely upon.
Why not plough, rotavate or double-dig?
Heavy tillage destroys soil structure and aggregation (soil particles that have been carefully put together by soil microbes). During mechanical disturbance organic matter is exposed to the air which is oxidised, releasing carbon dioxide into the atmosphere. Too much air in the system causes a microbial ‘boom’, which advances the breakdown of organic matter into carbon dioxide, rather than stable forms that stay within the soil. Soil structure is compromised leading to compaction and poor air and water flow over time, which takes a long time to re-build.
Other ways to use the broadfork:
The broadfork isn’t a one trick pony! It can also be used to dig root crops like potatoes and carrots.
We’ve also turned it over and dragged the tines along the soil to create furrows for direct seeding. You can also use this technique to mark out straight lines for planting.
Benefits of The Bloom & Gray Broadfork:
Stainless Steel - Lightweight but strong and corrosion resistant
Parabolic Curve In Tines - Ergonomically designed for an easier workload
Stainless Steel Handles - No need to replace weak wooden handles
