Which Soil Blocker Is Right For You?

Choosing the right soil blocker depends on what you're growing and how you like to work. Here's a simple guide to help you decide.

What kind of grower are you?

Most people fall into one of these four categories — find yours and we'll point you straight to the right tool

I grow cut flowers from seed

Start with small blocks. The 112 Blocker or Compact 36 will cover almost everything you grow. This is our most popular size.

‘I grow larger or fast-growing seeds — cosmos, zinnias, beans, peas’

Use large blocks. Bigger seeds benefit from more room. The Compact 9 or 28 Blocker is the one to add.

‘I sow hardy annuals in autumn, or start annuals early when they won't go outside for a while’

Consider adding thePotting On Plate and 15 Blocker. Moving seedlings into extra large blocks (instead of pots) keeps them thriving without the plastic

‘I want the complete no pot system’

The Complete Bundle gives you everything you need to go plastic free, from small block to large block.

"After some practice and sifting the soil first, my snapdragons are coming out really nice. I also started my lisianthus in the soil blocks — they're growing nicely and look really healthy."

Compact Soil Blocker Bundle (9 + 36 Blockers)
£230.00

In Stock & Ready To Ship.

Start your seedlings the plastic-free way with the Bloom & Gray Compact 36 and Compact 9 Soil Blocker bundle. Beautifully simple, UK-made tools designed for gardeners, flower farmers, and allotment growers who want strong, healthy transplants from day one.

This bundle consists of our two compact soil blocker sizes, the compact 9 and the compact 36.

Compact 9

This compact soil blocker compresses your seed-starting mix into 9 perfectly formed soil blocks, each measuring 54 × 54 × 54 mm. The generous block size holds plenty of compost, helping blocks stay moist for longer, ideal for busy sowing periods when watering can slip down the list.

Designed especially for larger, fast-growing seeds such as squash, zinnias, sunflowers, and cosmos, the Compact 9 makes seed starting quick and satisfying. In just a few minutes, you’ll have 9 uniform blocks ready for seeding.

Compact 36

This compact soil blocker compresses your seed-starting mix into 36 perfectly formed soil blocks, each measuring 27 × 27 × 38 mm. Designed especially for small to medium flower and vegetable seeds such as ammi, larkspur, nigella, lettuce, radish and snapdragons.

Soil blocking encourages air pruning, meaning roots stop growing when they reach the edge of the block and naturally branch out instead. The result is dense, fibrous root systems and sturdy, transplant-ready seedlings — without the root spirals and pot-bound stress caused by plastic cell trays.

For a low-waste seed-starting setup, pair your soil blocks with reusable shallow trays that can be used season after season.

Each Bloom & Gray Soil Blocker is made in the UK from stainless steel, finished with a durable polyester powder coating for longevity and a pop of colour. Replaceable silicone dibbles press a neat indent into each block, making sowing fast and consistent.
